What I can do for you

My passion is building and fine-tuning search engines.

In particular, I specialize in building vertical search engines like Indeed.com, Homethinking.com and Enormo.com (all companies I've worked with).

I've also worked on products such as Atlassian Jira and Confluence to improve their search capabilities.

Depending on what you need to launch your product successfully, I can

  • architect
  • code
  • mentor
  • train

What tools I use

For searching, Lucene, Solr and Elasticsearch.

For big data, Hadoop and Cascading.

For machine learning, I am preferential to scikit-learn.

I like simplicity and use either Python or Java. For web GUIs, I prefer the popular Django framework.

All for Good hired Kelvin to review and make several enhancements to our current Solr based search platform. I thoroughly vetted Kelvin's skills before deciding to work with him so I was not surprised by his expert level knowledge of Solr (especially geospatial search) and the general technical knowledge that he brought to the project.

What was a pleasant surprise is how incredibly thorough, committed, and full of positive energy he is. Before wrapping up his work with us he made sure to fully document everything he had done and made sure we all were completely up to speed on it. He has outstanding technical skills, a great attitude, and excellent communication skills. Nice guy too. I highly recommend Kelvin.

Kelvin is a conscientious and knowledgeable developer with a deep understanding of search. We had an issue with our Elasticsearch implementation which had us scratching our heads. Not only did Kelvin resolve our issue but he suggested and implemented improvements to our build process which have made a big difference to our setup. I would have no hesitation calling upon Kelvin again in the future.
